Social Media in the Classroom
This paper explains the importance of social media being being use in the classroom and why it is important. Along with that I have shared my personal thoughts on this topic. Throughout the past decade social media has significantly impacted today’s society. Social Media has become a movement towards people connecting, sharing and exploring in a cyberspace world. In the article “Why Social Media Must Have a Place in Schools” written by Daniel G. Krutka and Jeffrey P. Carpenter explains why social media should be influence in a classroom setting and how it would benefits students in and around the classroom.
Why teachers do not implement technology
Over the years social media has been dampened in a classroom rather than it being something encouraged. When social media is brought up in schools it becomes limiting due to certain aspects of privacy and concerns with parents allowing their child to be active on the internet. With that being said the main reason why students are limited in social media in a classroom environment is because children don’t have the proper knowledge when posting on the internet.
Why is technology relevant in the classroom?
Influencing social media in a classroom environment can improve students educational understanding and relationship with the teacher and other classmates. Being connected on social media gives students the confidence to be more sociable and connected with other students rather than being in a traditional class discussion. On media platforms such as Twitter, TodaysMeet, and Palet gives all students the opportunity to share “questions, reflections, exploring ideas, and challenges” anytime, anywhere. In the online world many teachers recognize that the quality of their students work develops because students recognize that their work is being shared with a open audience and their work can be viewed by anyone. This teaches students to become more of a respectful “digital citizen” and thoughtful before posting.
Social media is a platform that many educators should consider implementing into their classrooms. It should be something that is encouraged in a classroom because it is a different concept that benefits students when used properly.
Thoughts
Technology has been something that has become very significant to me. It has become a way for me to be able to express, connect, explore and share certain aspects of my life. Although social media and technology has become a very handy tool for my everyday use it has become a greater issue in a school environment. In the article “Why Social Media Must Have a Place in Schools” is a article that explain why social media needs to have a part in a classroom setting. For me, I was able to relate to this article from the authors message to my own experiences, opinions and beliefs of why social media should be in a classroom setting and how it impacts student in a learning environment.
Throughout my experience of having technology in the classroom it is something that has been encouraged for the most part. In the article it gives an example of a teacher demonstrating social media use in his classroom through blog posting. For me, in my past experiences throughout grade eight I was given the opportunity to be able to post blogs about certain aspects that we were learning and share it with other schools. This was significant to me because it gave me the opportunity to be able to participate in a different view of a discussion rather than being in a typical classroom sharing with peers. On that note the author states “social media use with students can improve student teacher relationship, learning among peers, and students’ perceptions of their ability to contribute to meaningful academic discussion”(Kruta & Carpenter, 2016). This is something that I can relate to because being able to blog for this class gave all the students the opportunity to be able to connect with other students and teachers from other schools and develop relationships.
In my opinion I believe social media should have a part in a classroom environment because it gets more students academically knowledgeable. For me, being raised in a world where technology and social media is being used constantly outside of the classroom it should be something that should have a part in the classroom as well. In my past experience when social media is brought up in classroom it is always about the negative side of it, such as the misuse of using social media and how posting things can affect a person’s digital footprint. With that being said these are important issue that need to be brought up in a classroom, but it is also important to teach students the proper knowledge of how to use social media “by using social media in classes, teachers can mentor students, during planned or spontaneous opportunities, concerning their digitals lives. Young people often need guidance regarding issues such as cybersafety, cyberethics, attention shifting, and digital credilbility” (Kruta & Carpenter, 2016). This is something I believe is important because students are already using social media outside the classroom, so influencing it into the classroom will give students better knowledge towards the online world.
In the classroom social media is something that many teacher should consider incorporating within their lesson plans. With that encouraging teachers to use social media in a classroom could be difficult due to the fact of how active they use it personally. In the article the author surveyed “teachers who were using twitter for their own professional development, many indicated that their schools still banned social media use for students once inside the building” (Kruta & Carpenter, 2016). In this case many teachers are using social media but do not have the right to share anything with students. For me, this is a great concerned because many teachers are secretly using social media such as twitter with their peers to share teaching moments involving their classrooms when students are not allowed to be influenced with social media at school. Overall I believe that the relationship between the teacher and student should be fair when accompanying social media within the classroom.
Overall social media is something that has influenced me several times while in school. For me, I think that social media is a great resource tool for teachers to build relationship with their students. Within this article the authors message was very strong of why social media should a have place in the classroom and how it benefits their student in and around the classroom.
