ECS 110 Reflection
An Educator named Horace Mann once wrote that “beyond all other devices of human origin public education is the ‘great equalizer’ of the conditions of men.” In his beliefs, he believed that public schools were rewarding to students who have the ability, hard work and is desirable to succeed in the classroom. However, his assumption has been promoted from others to believe that public schools are not a ‘great equalizer’ and cut down class inequalities through daily class rituals. The limitation within the classroom, students are standardized with themselves towards society.
In society many students face the confusion towards social standards in and out of a school environment. The word ‘Reproduction’ can be referred to as “effectively society reproduces a given quantity of power and privilege within an institution, society or generation.” The reproduction in society impacts students on their interpretation of importance and opportunity in life from their parents ‘class’. Classes are determined in four categories; upper class, middle class, working class and lower class. In public schools many students are impacted by these social classes, but negatively affecting them due to social class at home. This is an issue at home as students are being influenced by their parents and being raised towards beliefs, wealth and knowledge. At school students can struggle with these issues because many concepts in a classroom are designated to a certain class and are restricted to some students. As a result, this creates some students to succeed more at school than others. Within our notes it states; “social class can negatively affect how students learn and how teachers teach.” For many teachers Pedagogy is a problem that many educators face when teaching their students. Pedagogy is known as the method of teaching. This can be an issue that teachers face when educating students as many teachers do not understand that all students come from unique backgrounds. Robert Rosenthal created The Pygmalion effect which determines a teacher's expectation from a student's performances. From this, Rosenthal noticed that “students live up or down to their teachers.” This is significant because social class affects students in and out of a school environment.
For most, meritocracy is an aspect that many people face in their day to day life. Meritocracy is the influence of success normalities based on an individual's power and ambition within sociality. As an adult meritocracy is based on income and social class in order to have authority in society. With that being said, in a school setting meritocracy can be led by students that are ‘smarter’ than others. For example, a student may comprehend something slower than others, but is criticized from other students for being ‘slow,’ but in reality the student just needs a little more time to understand something. Within the education system the curriculum is a concept that significantly affects the students social class. Most curriculums are designated towards a specific social class targeting a general class of students. The curriculum in a public school is designed for specific expectations that need to be taught in order for students to move onto the next grade level. A teacher is responsible to educate the students for all of them to succeed, but in most cases all students learn in a different paces making some students excel more than others. This can be an issue as some students will fall behind creating challenges for them to focus on the daily lessons. According to Jean Anyon “children of upper-middle class parents receive a different educational experience than do children of poorer parents.” This is a fact not an issue because students are treated differently based on their learning abilities and social class.
According to theorists Bowles and Gintis “schools correspond to the institutional and structure of economy.” In a school setting educators only focus on the ‘ideal’ structure of the economy. Social mobility can be referred to as “the degree to which an individual’s family or group’s social status can change throughout the course of their life.” In the economy the government is constantly adjusting jobs and funding within institutions. Students can be influenced by social structure because of the impact that their parents have within the working class and their involvement in the economy. The effect from cultural deprivation is something that middle class children have an advantage over lower class students. For example, middle class parents would be able to teach their kids how to save and appreciate the value of money; For lower class families they appreciate the value of money, but a different level as they do not make enough income to achieve particular goals. Middle class families are able to support their children because of the higher income and higher standards. In public schools the impact on learning for students varies for every student. Each student is influenced from the home and their school environment. Being influenced by both students could find it hard to learn certain aspects due to beliefs, wealth or experiences. With that being said, the social structure of ones can affect a student’s life understanding of material in the classroom.
Gender identity is commonly stereotypical in today’s society. With the assumption from most, many people become judgemental when identifying individuals being male or female. However, these assumption can be misleading because many people do not live a ‘heterosexual lifestyle’ and effect many people in the LGBTT2IQQ community. When a person is trying to identify an individual gender expression is commonly used. Gender expression can be referred to a person’s appearance or behaviour. This is relatable to binary stereotypical identity opposites because the expectation that people suit either male or female are typically judged if they are masculine or feminine. These assumptions can lead to conflict because if one's gender does not fit a traditional gender identity it creates misleading interpretations. In society today, many people make the assumption that everyone is heterosexual, but in reality that is not the case.
Living in a world with so many people you never know who someone truly is. Social construction of gender is a concept that everyone faces in their day to day life. Social construction of gender is known to be everything people ‘know’ or see as ‘reality’, but not fully accurate. The word social construction of gender could be referred to almost as the common expression “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” as this is the way some people identify people by their physical appearance, mannerisms and the way they talk. These assumptions can lead to not being accurate as they are based on those assumptions does not mean they are true. In a school environment this can be problematic because if a student does not fulfill the certain standard towards their ‘true’ identity they can be teased or bullied. For example, in a high school setting a male student may be very studious, not very good at sports and with feminine mannerisms. This can be misleading because classmates could assume that this student is gay because he does not suit the typical male role. His classmates make assumptions on his sexual orientation that could affect him personally towards his orientation that could make him change his appearance, personality or academically just so he could avoid being teased. Although the student is actually gay he would avoid coming out so he would not get judged. This is problematic in a school environment, especially in high school students who are still trying to figure out who they are mentally and physically. When someone is assuming thing towards another person it makes that person question who they are.
For most people, expectations and judgment are inquiries that everyone has when first meeting someone new. Towards unrealistic expectations on gender and sexuality can lead to other things such as discrimination. Discrimination is known as a biased analysis of different people towards race, age and sex. In this case discrimination is used towards people and their sexual orientation. For many LGBTT2IQQ people they feel a sense of not belonging in the community because many heterosexual people are biased on their assumption of traditional male and female identities. For example, in class a video was shown of a transgender women going into a washroom at a bar. The bar refused for the women to use the women's washroom because she was a man. This discrimination because the person identified as a woman, but her being a male made the bar feel that it was not suitable for her to use the women’s washroom. Although the person identified herself as a female they still did not let her go.
Gender and sexuality is a common problem that many people face especially towards LGBTT2IQQ people. In society many people are not accepting towards people for not suiting the typical characteristics of male or female and can lead to judgment or not feeling accepted. In a school environment students feel judgement towards their identity. People should limit judgement on people when comparing past stereotypical lifestyle towards current thinking regarding other options of life when supporting one another.
