Land -Based Learning Invitation: The Saskatchewan Legislative Building
Land Based Description
For my Land-Based Learning Invitation assignment, I decided to focus my invitation on Saskatchewan Legislative Building. The reason why I chose this historical building is because I believe it is something that is critical the students should know what meaning towards this building. Growing up, I was never taught the significance of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building or why it is so important to Saskatchewan.
A little historical context about the Saskatchewan Legislative Building is that it was a long construction process when being built. From complications and changes throughout the building process, construction started in 1906 and ended 1912. Before building the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, Walter Scott, Saskatchewan’s first premier, wanted the location of this building to be a place in Regina in a large location that could be used for the enjoyment of people that came there. So in reality, Walter Scott, definitely maintains his goal because it is not only one of the biggest tourist attractions for Regina, but it is a common place for Regina/Saskatchewan residents to go to enjoy being in the park.
From a political and economic standpoint, the Saskatchewan Legislative plays a big role in both of these areas. Although this building can be a tourist and recreational destination for most, it is a critical building when it comes to the Provincial government. This building is important because it is the only Legislative building in Saskatchewan, in each province’s capital city, they have a Legislative building. From a simple perspective, this building allows provincial political parties to come together to discuss particular legislatives that are critical towards the provincials responsibilities in maintaining or changing legislatives within the province. This is important because it allows the province to maintain harmony within many different elements such as the economy and health care.
After doing this assignment, it has made me more aware about the variety of different things that the Saskatchewan Legislative Building brings for the province of Saskatchewan. From different viewpoints it can either be a place of relaxation and enjoyment, or it can be something that is more practical and serious. Although this location has a lot to offer to people in so many different ways, it has made me realize that this is a part of Canadian Identity, although, this building is something that I cannot protect in being a part of it is something that is a part of the history of Canada. In my video I briefly talked about how Saskchewan became a province in 1905, so in 1906 this building was in the process of being made. In reality this building has technically been a part of Saskatchewan since it has been made a province, which is very interesting to me. From a teaching point of view, I learned that this is an important building to teach students. Although in my video I mainly talked about the purpose of the building, due to it being related to the outcome I used. I think they’re are so many other teaching points that can be used from this building. One thing that I really wanted to bring up in my lesson that I didn’t was the historical architecture and the details that were put within this building. During my research for this assignment, I used this book called Building For the Future written by Gordon Barnahrt. In this book it provides a great historical background and context of this building being built and the process that it took. Which I found that would be interesting to teach students about.
Now knowing more about this building, I am still wondering why this building is not recognized more in schools. There are various teaching elements to this building and it is a great connection to use for students to learn about Saskatchewan government and Identity.
