ELNG 310 - My Philosophy on Literacy
Literacy is strongly influenced by the human race on an everyday basis. Everything an individual does is impacted by some kind of literacy in some way. Whether it is reading/sending a text message, reading a menu, or even watching your favourite TV show. Almost anything that is influenced by language is contributed to literacy in some type of way. Before we are even born to the day we die, we continue to grow more and more in different aspects in using our mother tongue. However, in order for an individuals language to expand literacy plays an important role in evolving. Literacy is very important because it provides us the fundamentals of having an understanding within society. With that being said, K-12 education is a prime factor in contributing to someone’s development in their literacy. Through these twelve or more years of education, students are influenced by literacy at every grade level and in every subject. Although literacy consists of reading, writing and comprehension, these factors are critical in learning to benefit students in their futures.
For me, being a future teacher, literacy is something that I am going to influence throughout my entire career. Literacy is something that plays a big factor in most of the subjects that are taught. Becoming a teacher I take on the responsibility to teach my students the required outcomes and indicators that are in the curriculum. My job is to adapt my lessons/units appropriately for all my students to learn the best way they can. However, every student learns differently, some students grasp concepts and ideas quicker than others. With that being said, literacy may impact me differently adjusting to students to students that may need extra help. For example, in my ELNG 200 placement I got to observe many EAL students read and write english. From this experience, it opened my eyes to realize that as a teacher many of my future students might be learning english as their second language. This is important because literacy is important for students to learn, if they do not have this quality they may have a difficult time in the future understanding concepts and things.
For my visual representation I decided to make cookies. Cookies represent my perception on literacy because in order to have delicious cookies you have to add all the right amount of ingredients for them to turn out. In comparing this to literacy , in order for students to understand concepts dealing with literacy, whether that is reading or writing, they begin to add the ingredients to their knowledge of understanding. As a result, once they have the knowledge of something it results in understanding, which in this case would be the cookies.
